Biography

Luca Lanzi's characters are born from an inner universe. They are physical, three-dimensional personalities, unsettling at first sight, but capable of revealing the most secret recesses of the soul that would otherwise remain unviolated, because they are too weak and fragile to be brought out into the open unless by using a metaphorical reality.
The world of imagination from which the artist takes his subject is the result of the transposition of a series of elements from the world of play into the realm of myth.
Toys, mechanisms and animals are given a sort of ambiguity, but they are animated by an inner light with the intention of transmitting a human appearance.
His horses, ducks, donkeys and puppets, absorbed and melancholic, are objects that embody a person's experience at some stage of their life, only to be abandoned and replaced by another interest or desire.
Just as for abandoned objects, Lanzi's works express the wear and tear exerted by the passage of time, and this somewhat worn appearance suggests a rediscovered innocence. At the same time it transmits a sense of unease, the memory of a promise that has not been kept, or new desires that take the place of others forever forgotten.
Luca Lanzi has chosen to work on subjects whose only point of reference is the works themselves, and to achieve this, he uses statuary sculpture as the form of expression best suited to give a concept a physical presence. A fetish-doll, idol, rag-doll or inflatable animal, transferred into the materials of sculpture or transposed into the dimension of drawing, emerges "in thought as emotive containers of an elemental, primitive state, in which the warmth of sentimental regression to the age of games cohabits with the primordial mystery of hieratic depiction."

Luca Lanzi was born in 1977 in Bologna, the city in which he still lives and works. In 2004 he obtained a diploma in sculpture at the Academy of Fine Arts, Bologna. Later he studied in workshops at the Berlin Academy of Art, and he moved to that city when he obtained an art scholarship from the Venturoli Artistic Foundation. He has exhibited in many public and private venues. Critics who have written about his work include Flaminio Gualdoni, Silvia Ferrari, Francesca Nicoli, Alessandra Redaelli and Viviana Siviero.
