Artist in Residence
FROM THE FAENZA PRIZE TO OFFICINE SAFFI
Ceramic works by PÄIVI RINTANIEMI, LJUBICA JOCIĆ KNEŽEVIĆ and NERO / ALESSANDRO NERETTI on show in Milan.
The Faenza prize is the most important international prize for professional ceramic artists: officially founded in 1932, the award has become a global point of reference, and its prestige has been further enhanced in recent years by the work of the museum MIC – Museo Internazionale delle Ceramiche, Faenza. This project has been amplified by cooperation with Officine Saffi, the only gallery in Milan that exhibits solely art ceramics. The relationship has given rise to the exhibition titled Artist in Residence which will run from 1 to 30 October 2015. The works exhibited are the result of the period of residence that the three winners of the 58th Faenza prize (2014) spent in the Officine Saffi workshop in Milan.
The exhibition presents works by Päivi Rintaniemi (Finland, 1956), winner of the Over 40 section; Nero, a pseudonym used by Alessandro Neretti (Italy, 1980), who received the award for the Under 40 section; and Ljubica Jocić Knežević (Serbia, 1973), who won the CERSAIE prize reserved for designs in which the basic tile is interpreted in an original and innovative way.
During the weeks of work at Officine Saffi, the three artists developed new projects, hallmarked by the distinctive traits of their respective oeuvres which brought them their success in the Faenza prize. Rintaniemi works on a poetic combination of archaic forms and minimalist design. Her containers, that seem to suggest uterine-type ampoules, have a sinuous and harmonious identity in space, interrupted by dynamic textures of great expressive power.
Nero / Alessandro Neretti works on a coherent itinerary in the field of what he defines as post-realistic art, developing a process in which he analyses and presents socio-economic phenomena of local and global significance. Jocić Knežević is engaged in the attentive control of shape and materials, working in the field of a type of abstraction that seems to suggest biodynamic elements, developed into solutions of sophisticated elegance.
