Officine Saffi is pleased to invite you on Thursday, June 30 at 6.30pm to the open studio with the artist Nicholas Lees.
Liquid : Solid, is the title of the artist's recent experiments on the boundaries of matter and the interaction between what is solid and material, and what is fluid and elusive. The starting point of his research is an investigation into how to represent physical and spatial edges, the shadows of matter. Lees developed this theme during his residency at Officine Saffi in Milan by examining boundaries and how they can be seen and felt through shadows, incorporating the idea of the uncertainty of materiality.
Nicholas works with wall relief panels, integrating his paper creations with those in ceramics. The embossed panels permit a wide freedom to experiment using ceramic forms (solid) and thick viscous glazes (liquid).
Nicholas Lees was awarded the Cersaie Award at the 59th Premio Faenza, the result of a collaboration between Officine Saffi and the Faenza International Museum of Ceramics.
The project this year at the second edition will end in September with Helene Kirchmair, winner ex aequo with Thomas Stollar for the Under 40 section.
With the Artist in Residence project, Officine Saffi presents itself as a centre for the promotion and diffusion of culture and of contemporary art production. It offers a chance to exchange knowledge involving guest artists and the entire community. The result of this osmosis will be the final project exhibited at the end of the residency programme in a dedicated exhibition at the Officine Saffi gallery. Through their residency, the guest artist has the opportunity to become a part of the surrounding environment and of local culture, interpreting and incorporating the new stimuli in the Officine Saffi medium of choice, ceramics.
Visitors to the event will also be able to enjoy an exhibition entitled "Officine Saffi hosts the 59th Premio Faenza".
